Consumption watch on engines

The United Steamship Company DFDS Seaways has equipped Dover, Delft and Dunkerque Seaways with a system from Turkish company Kral which watches the consumption of all four main engines in each ship, the power generation units and the two burners.

Although there is a local electronic indicator, the information of all nine consumption measuring systems is transferred to the bridge and displayed by the Kral BEM 800.

Nigel Cureton, fleet manager of the ships explained: “The analysis of the data allows us to optimise the fuel consumption of the ship as a whole or individually for each individual section of the system.” He added that during the transition phase from heavy oil to distillates the system helps in observing the specified temperature gradient of the engine manufacturers.

The system also allows a comparison between the ships and thus helps with overall fleet optimisation.
