Armour installed using Echoscope sonar
The latest project involving the use of XBloc armoured units developed by Delta Marine Consultants (DMC) DMC in The Netherlands has seen them successfully trialled at Swinoujscie, Poland.
The trial was carried out with the use of an Echoscope 3D sonar developed by Coda Octopus. Using it made it possible to ‘see’ the Xblocs beneath the water in real time, as they were being placed. The Echoscope was mounted on a CAT 385 excavator.
Using the Echoscope made it possible to ensure that the Xblocs where correctly placed before releasing the lifting chain. Using the sonar also meant that divers were not required to check the placement of the units.
The trial has been carried out on a 3km breakwater required for the LNG terminal at Swinoujscie, which is being built by a joint venture of Boskalis, Hochtief, Per Aarsleff and Doraco. The Echoscope is also being used on Xbloc projects in the Middle East.
