Belgian Prince visits DEME project in Brazil
Prince Filip of Belgium recently visited a remediation project being executed by DEME subsidiary DEC during his visit to Brazil on behalf of Flanders Investment & Trade.
During his visit to Brazil, Prince Filip visited the Lixao da Alemoa contaminated site in the Brazilian harbour city of Santos, which is currently being remediated by DEC.
Brasil Terminal Portuario, a Brazilian terminal operating company whose main customer will be shipping company MSC, signed the contract for the remediation project with DEC in March 2009. The value of the project is €75m.
The contract requires the remediation of the Santos harbour site and is a turnkey project, which means that DEC is not only responsible for guaranteeing its implementation but also designed the concept and arranged the financing and the accompanying guarantees.
The sites are at the edge of a bay, making the substratum unstable. The dumped material leaches into a river and further into the sea. Altogether the contaminated soil covers an area of 45 hectares. The remediation requires processing 680,000 cu/m of domestic and industrial waste, part of which is highly contaminated. Brasil Terminal Portuario is to build a container terminal on the remediated site.
