Besix at work on new Belgian lock
Besix in Belgium says it is due to complete work on a fourth lock at Lanaye in the province of Liège Belgium in 2015. The contract under which it is undertaking the work is worth approximately €102m.
The new lock will be 225m in length and 25m wide and will allow the passage of larger volumes of traffic. The lock will provide access from the Albert Canal in Belgium to the river Meuse in the The Netherlands.
“Besix is particularly proud to realize one of the biggest civil engineering projects of the decade in Wallonia. This site will become a major fluvial European crossroad,” said Johan Beerlandt, CEO of BESIX Group.
Apart from the new lock, Besix is also responsible for related work including a hydroelectric power plant, pumping plant, and a new quay wall situated on the left bank of the Albert Canal in Lixhe. Once the project is completed, Besix is also due to renovate the three existing locks.
