Birse Civils recognised for flood defence works

A collaborative approach between Birse Civils and the UK’s Environment Agency for an innovative, sustainable solution to strengthening the flood defences at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire received national recognition at the British Construction Industry Awards in London in October.

The project was shortlisted in the small (up to £4m) civil engineering category and was also a finalist in the Environmental and Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Awards. The project team were delighted to receive a ‘Highly Commended’ in recognition of all their hard work.

Innes Thomson, Environment Agency Project Sponsor said, ‘Earning a Highly Commended recommendation from the judges was a great result, reflecting very much on the dedication of the project team in delivering the Gainsborough Flood Alleviation Scheme safely and respectfully within an urban environment, as well as being within time and budget.’

The £16m project, which started in 2006 and was delivered in two phases over four years, comprised the strengthening and improvement of some 2km of existing flood defences.
