Birse Coastal achieves gold at Considerate Constructors awards

The award judges said the monitor for the site has observed “excellent standards across all areas of considerate site practice, and particularly the regular interaction with site neighbours. This site is a beacon as to what can be achieved across a large site area, and a credit to the UK construction industry.”

The £30m project being carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency involves a stepped concrete revetment with wave return wall, new lower promenade, improved upper promenade, raised main flood wall and timber groynes on the foreshore. Additional enhancements include refurbished boat launch slipway, viewing platforms, significantly widened upper promenade at the town centre, improved disabled access and parking.

Birse Coastal has also announced that it has been awarded the £0.7m Walney 2 project for VolkerInfra and their customer DONG Energy. The works involve placing a steel duct through the sea defences at Thornton Cleveleys to receive the export power cable from the Walney offshore wind farm. Measuring 60m long and with a diameter of 700mm, the new duct will be encased in concrete as part of the works. To enable the duct to be placed, a sheet piled marine cofferdam will be built 60m long by 7m deep with a width of 6m.

The works commenced on site on 14 March 2011, with planned completion by the end of May 2011. The key project milestone date is for the duct to be installed and available by 30 April 2011 for DONG Energy’s offshore cable laying operations.
