Contract awarded to widen Amazonehaven

Van Oord and Besix have been awarded a design and construct contract to widen Rotterdam’s Amazonehaven seaport.

Widening the port will make vessel traffic control safer and more efficient. The contract was awarded by the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

The work involves constructing a 1,000m quay wall, demolishing another 950m quay wall, carrying out earthworks, installing an underwater mattress and covering it with a layer of rock.

Van Oord will excavate 1,000,000 m3 of material, most of which will be re-used in the project. The remaining material will be marketed. Van Oord will deploy a suction dredger, crane ships, and dry earth-moving equipment. Preparations have already started and the project should be completed by March 2014.
