Determined contractor defeats weather

Work at the port started in September 2007 with the first wharf alignment but was subsequently affected in the autumn of 2008 and the winter of 2009 by unusually unsettled and stormy weather which delayed the progress of construction on the outer wharf. As a result the contractor implemented measures which allowed a return to schedule. These included the doubling of the on site dredging capacity.

Specialized diving teams of Naviera Daedalus carried out leveling tasks which speeded the building up of the bedding layer which had previously been undertaken by the company’s divers. A second tug boat team also speeded up the transport of drawers between Castellón and Port Adriano, to take best advantage of days of good weather.

Since the outset of the project all units of Naviera Daedalus have been fully involved, including the split hopper barge Neptun Kha, the multicat Dive Kha, the hydro survey vessel Daedalus and up to 30 divers with their approved diving equipment and corresponding support vessels. Tasks completed include dredging, disposal of dredged material, flushing works, the placing of blocks and jetties, reinforcement of submerged concrete, the placing of drawers and hydro survey.

Naviera Daedalus’ completed works have resulted in an additional 82 new moorings for vessels between 20m and 60m long, with a surface area of over 25,000 sq/m. The port’s future facilities include 670 new parking spaces, 10,000 sq/m of technical space, a docking and launching ramp for small vessels, 4,000 sq/m of commercial space and a 1,800 sq/m area for customer services facilities.

Carlos Rey Menendez, managing director of Naviera Daedalus, said that this extension was of ‘enormous significance’ to Port Adriano as it enables the port to berth the latest generation of luxury yachts and to become one of the Mediterranean’s leading marinas for mega yachts.
