Drones monitor shoreline in Italy
Danish water environment consultants DHI Group are providing modelling software for a project using an airborne drone to monitor sea state conditions on a stretch of beach in Italy.
DHI are a partner on the Innovative Methodologies for Coastal Environmental Monitoring and Analysis (MIRAMar) project in Italy and the group’s researchers will use their own software for the modelling part of the study. The project is examining new ways to survey, monitor and analyse the effects of strong wind and waves on shorelines using small, remote-controlled, camera-equipped drones.
Images from a stretch of beach in Liguria Italy will be combined with sea state observations and data from a hydrodynamic computer model including: wave height and direction; and wave generated currents. The information will create a time series of how the beach has evolved and how it may change in the future, final computer models showing patterns of erosion and accumulation along the shore.
