Eco-port proposal for Menorca marina

The winner of the tender will obtain the concession for a leisure harbour inside the

Puerto Natural de Mahón

(Mahon’s Natural Harbour) on the Island of Menorca.

Under the name of ‘Maó Port Natural’, this new port is based on independent and self-governing platforms, which can dock as many as 20 boats each at a time (depending on their size). All supplies required by the boats come from renewable energies. Electricity comes from eolic and solar energy for the service modules, and fresh water is obtained by a self powered desalination plant. The ecological anchoring systems based on helical anchorages and Seaflex, prevent the seabed erosion that results from the use of traditional concrete blocks and chains.

The Maó Port Natural proposal starts with the premise of respecting the island’s biodiversity and avoiding boats agglomerations on the coast, by locating boats at the platforms in strategic areas which are separated far apart from the coast. In addition, the proposal also aims to prevent indiscriminate anchorings which erode the seabed and hinder navigation, not to mention that the use of renewable energies contributes to prevent global warming.

The project is the fruit of the cooperation between Ronautica’s RTDI Department (Research, Technological Development and Innovation Department) and the consulting firm in engineering, Acuática.
