EU finance to re-vamp Stockholm port
The European Union is committing more than €14m from the TEN-T programme to co-finance a project to re-vamp the infrastructure of the Port of Stockholm to help realise the ‘Nordic Triangle’.
The project, which was selected for funding under the 2012 TEN-T Annual Programme, comprises the redevelopment of Stockholm’s inner city port facilities in the Värta-Frihamnen area.
It targets the expansion of the Värtahamnen pier with the hope of creating an “efficient, modern and environmentally-friendly” facility for both passenger and freight transport.
As part of the project, the pier will be extended and renovated, the existing railway line will be upgraded and a new terminal will be built.
Once complete, the development is expected to boost the long-term efficiency and sustainability of the port and improve the ‘Nordic Triangle’, which links the Nordic countries of Sweden and Finland and their capitals to each other and improves passenger and freight transport from the region to central Europe, the Baltic countries, and Russia.
