Forth Replacement Crossing reaches milestone

The current Forth Road Bridge, one of the UK’s best known structures, is showing signs of deterioration and is seen as not suitable as the long term main crossing on the Firth of Forth. In 2011 construction started on the £790m Forth Replacement Crossing project, to be built upriver from the existing crossing. There are a number of elements to the projects, including road connection works, and principle contractors for the bridge itself comprise Hochtief, Dragados, American Bridge International and Morrisons.

The central tower foundations are now complete and have been handed over to the tower team. The work involved blasting Beamer Rock to below water level and the construction of a cofferdam to create a water-free environment. Recently nearly 3,000m3 of water were removed from the cofferdam allowing work to continue on the superstructure itself.
