Maasvlakte 2 objection withdrawn by Faunabescherming

The two parties reached agreement on 19 May. The objection by the Faunabescherming to the construction of the new port area was the last remaining objection to the project. The Port Authority said it was ‘content’ with the agreement because construction work for Maasvlakte 2 can now proceed without any danger of delay.

The most important substantive point of agreement is that the Port Authority will draft management plans for areas in which lesser black-backed gulls, common terns and Sandwich terns can nest on Maasvlakte 2 and the existing Maasvlakte. These management plans will take effect from March 2010.

In a statement, the Port said the Faunabescherming has not only withdrawn its objection to the construction permit (officially the permit in accordance with art. 19d of the Nature Conservation Act), but also its objection to the Access Restriction Acts for the Voordelta area insofar as these relate to nature compensation for Maasvlakte 2.
