Port pipelines get deep treatment
It might be easy to overlook the part the pipelines running along the new Scrabster Harbour quay in the north of Scotland play, especially as they are buried underfoot.
As part of the contract, JGC Engineering of Thurso supplied some 4km of pipe for the import/export lines, including those leading to and from storage tanks.
Twelve pipelines are grouped together in a buried duct leading to the import/export take-off area. Although specified for the job of supplying the needs of this oil and gas, marine renewables, and fishing industries facility, the actual burial process is pretty harsh.
To be on the safe side all the pipes in this section were protected with both a primer and then a medium duty tape, Desoclad 50, applied with a tape wrapping machine. This gave the pipes the kind of resistance needed to avoid damage during both handling and backfilling of the trench.
