Reducing flood risks in the Limfjord

The 180km Limfjord in Northern Denmark separates the island of Vendsyssel-Thy from the rest of the Jutland peninsula and was formed following a storm in 1862, providing an outlet to the sea for the present city of Thyborøn. Erosion of the channel has led to increased flooding, threatening cities around the fjord with over 60,000 people at risk.

DHI Group provided the tools to determine the correlation between erosion and storm surges along with possible impacts of climate change. The solutions included modelling past, present and future storm surges to gain a better understanding of how changing conditions in the Limfjord will affect flooding. Consultation on possible solutions to reduce storm surges will enable the Danish Coastal Authority to implement the best answer to prevent flooding based on a comprehensive modelling toolbox.
