Sassnitz-Mukran expands base role again

It is now again exploiting its available space and deepwater location by hosting the production of concrete tunnel lining sections.

From April, internationally active concrete production giant Mobil Baustoffe will build 121,000 circular tunnel lining segments at the port for the Copenhagen underground railway Metro Cityring project. Completed segments will be shipped direct from Sassnitz-Mukran to Denmark.

Up to April the port is completing the infrastructure needed for three and a half years of production, building a new 3,000 m2 logistics hall for Mobil Baustoffe and also restructuring an existing second hall. That second hall is getting an additional crane, a new concrete mixing plant and a drying tunnel used to harden the concrete segments.

A spokeswoman told MJ that both hall developments were being financed by the port but said no information on the construction firms was available at this time. No new waterside facilities were planned for the project, she added.

Port MD Harm Sievers said the Mobil Baustoffe project “underscores the attractiveness of our location as a transport hub.” He said short distances to Scandinavia were only one of the advantages. “Our excellent infrastructure and available freestanding and warehousing areas” were others that had led to the decision to choose the port as a production location, he declared.

Planned for completion at the port by summer, meanwhile, is second stage development of a components base for an offshore Baltic wind farm facility belonging to energy concern EnBW.

First stage infrastructure development of the 60,000 m2 site has created a facility with a surface bearing 50t/m2. By summer it is planned to have a 410m long quayside in operation, backing on to a new six hectare site for component production. Deepwater berthing for supply and service ships from tugs to crew transfer vessels has been created alongside the site.
