Trelleborg wins fender contract for Brunei
Swedish engineering company Trelleborg has won a contract to supply a large number of its SeaGuard foam fenders to Brunei Shell’s Kuala Belait supply base.
Brunei Shell is one of Asia’s biggest energy companies with a long history dating back over 80 years. The company has significant oil and gas fields off Kuala Belait in the extreme west of Brunei and it is for their supply base wharf at the location that the fenders are being supplied, through local Brunei registered contractor Waqi Sdn Bhd.
A project to upgrade the wharf is underway, resulting in a requirement for 93 fenders to span six berthing spaces. The supply base wharf covers a length of 325m and the fenders will be spaced 1.5m apart. An additional 21 fenders will be supplied as spares, making a total requirement of 114 fenders.
Waqi Sdn Bhd states that a factor in selecting Trelleborg’s SeaGuard 700 foam fenders was that they could be installed quickly and assure low maintenance requirements going forward.
Steven Raaj, operations director at Waqi Sdn Bhd added: “Trelleborg’s reputation preceded the company too. We knew that we needed a supplier with a proven track record to be able to deliver such large quantities so quickly.”
Trelleborg states that they ensure that the right systems are supplied on a case by case basis to guarantee the best value and most effective solution to each project over the lifetime of the fender system.
Richard Hepworth, president at Trelleborg Marine Systems said: “Although rubber remains the traditional material of choice for fenders, foam fenders have significant advantages over rubber in many cases. For Kuala Belait, a fast turnaround was essential.”
The 114 SeaGuard fenders are 1.5m long, 1m wide and foam filled. Low maintenance is assured as the polyurethane elastomer is highly resistant to the effects of ozone and ultra violet light. They can be deployed floating or suspended, against a quay wall and boast high energy absorption and low reaction force. They are also non-marking and being of a foam filled design are impervious to deflation or sinking.
