Award Tops Work Parade for Busy A&P

The decision to present A&P Birkenhead with the award entailed canvassing ITM members in the marine sector as well as ship repair specialists.

Another A&P yard going from strength to strength since re-opening earlier this year is A&P Tees, located near Middlesbrough. The yard commenced operations with thrusters repairs to its first vessel in dry dock, the 3,086dwt dredger Heortnese, owned by the Tees & Hartlepool Port Authority.

The largest contract since then has been a two week dry docking of Farstad Shipping’s 4,680dwt offshore supply vessel Far Service. Other dry docking contracts have included dredgers and tugs operating in the Tees region. Currently in the yard is the 1,789dwt river dredger Cleveland County, with James Fisher’s coastal tanker Chartsman due in for a special survey.

A&P Falmouth, which is enjoying a return to full capacity following the recent re-opening of the rebuilt Queen’s Wharf, has won a repeat contract from Swedish ship owners Brostrom, which was satisfied with refit works carried out earlier this year to their tanker Bro Traveller.

Bro Traveller spent 64 days in the Falmouth dry dock. Works to the 143m long vessel included blasting and coating 19 cargo and ballast tanks with a surface area of 25,000m 2, making the task one of the largest tank blasting jobs in Europe. Other works on the 14,371dwt vessel included steel works in the tanks, an overhaul of the main engine, Becker rudder repairs and hull painting.

After Bro Traveller left the dry dock precisely on schedule, Brostrom awarded the yard a contract to undertake similar refit work on another of their fleet of chemical tankers. Works on Bro Trader are currently underway at A&P Falmouth.
