College commits to diver training academy

The College’s Glaciere Maritime Academy is a purpose built dive centre, headed up by one of the leading figures of the dive industry, Alan Whitehead.

Alan Whitehead is a PADI Platinum Course Director, one of only 40 people in the world who hold this distinction. He is joining the Academy as director of diving and will be developing the centre to be one of the leading providers of qualifications for both leisure and commercial diving.

Alan Whitehead said, “I have been living and working in Malta for the last few years, but I’ve come back to Liverpool because I really believe in what this Academy can offer young people. I took up diving when I was young and it has given me the chance to travel the world and have a successful career, this is something I want other people to have the opportunity to do.”

The Academy is one of very few purpose built centres in the north of England and currently offers a range of safety courses and the full breadth of PADI qualifications. With the growth of Liverpool’s port and wind farm industry twinned with opportunities overseas, there is a growing demand for commercial divers and Alan is looking to develop the centre to offer both leisure and commercial diving qualifications.
