Diver detection systems for South Korea

Atlas Elektronik is going to supply a significant number of its Cerberus Mod 2 sonar systems to LIG Nex1, the South Korean aerospace and defence company.

Diver Detection Sonar (DDS) systems are subsurface sonar and acoustic location systems employed to provide detection, tracking and classification information on any threats that could endanger property and lives. The threat of an underwater attack is obviously a concern to many parties, including the maritime industry, port law enforcement agencies and the government.

However it is worth understanding that this detection isn’t usually as easy as it sounds.

Phil Cooper of Atlas explained, “The clever part is having a system which can tell a diver from a boat on the surface, or even a fish. Then you need to be able to track him so that you can get an idea of what he is actually doing, and where he is going.”

He added that the regions that will see the deployment of these systems “provide a challenging environment due to the water conditions in the area, which can make sonar recognition difficult.”
