Divers to the rescue
RS Divers Ltd were called by Solent Towage to salvage their sunken tug Asterix on 30-03-15. The Tug had gone down, narrowly avoiding incurring loss of life at Fawley Refinery on Southampton Water, as reported in last month’s ‘Maritime Journal’.
After a long period of planning and coordination the lift was scheduled for 10-04-15. Solent Towage boomed the site before a large crane barge, The Apache managed by Blade Runner Shipping positioned itself on one of the Solent Towage barges and manoeuvred itself into position.
The Willcarry 100 barge equipped with RS Divers’ dive spread and salvage pumps, which had been on site from the previous day preparing the lift, worked throughout the afternoon and evening successfully lifting the tug and pumping it out before allowing the vessel to be worked on by a preservation team back on its berth.
This was RS Divers’ 30th salvage. The company says that on average it lifts around 6 boats a year.
