Crowley supports platform tow-out
Crowley Maritime Corporation has played a leading role in the tow-out of a tension leg platform in the US Gulf demonstrating the era of large oil and gas platforms in deep water is still alive and well.
Heerema Marine Contractors provided a European element to the installation of Hess Corporation’s Stampede platform in around 3,500ft of water. All three of Crowley’s Ocean-class tugs were involved, Ocean Wind and three 455-series barges delivered 300ft sections of 12, 3,400ft-long securing tendons while Ocean Sky and Ocean Sun along with two third-party tugs towed the platform to its final location 150 miles offshore, a journey lasting four days.
The tugs then used their DP capabilities to maintain a standard star-shaped pattern for the third phase of the operation involving positioning and stabilising Stampede while it was secured to the tendons. After the platform was made storm-safe Crowley’s assets were demobilised and released for their next mission.
