Former East German Workboat is Sold to the Adriatic
The latest but probably not the last chapter in the life of a remarkable German workboat has just been written in Rostock where Fairplay has sold the last tug in what used to be the former GDR state-owned Technical Fleet.
The 35 year old single-screw Rosenort was commissioned in 1967 from the Edgar Andre Shipyard in Magdeburg for coastal and deep-sea towage and international salvage. She used to belong to the old VEB Bagger Bugsier und Bergungsreederei (BBB) which went bankrupt after unification and was taken over by Hamburg’s Fairplay Group in the early 1990s. One of her early jobs was reportedly towing a barge loaded with 1,000 tons of dynamite to Nigeria.
Rosenort, which has been used as a harbour tug in Rostock since 1990, has been sold to Jadran Tuna in Croatia and will tow underwater tuna cages in the Adriatic under her new name Cezar.
The 26.4m long, 7.6m wide, 127grt tug draws 3.59m. She has a bollard pull of around 11 tons, a speed of 10 knots and is powered by a Type 6NVD48Au diesel of 552kW from the old and former GDR engine builders VEB Schiffsmaschinenbau Karl Liebknecht (SKL) in Magdeburg.
