ISU Survey Sees Decline in Salvage Workload
The results of the International Salvage Union s (ISU) annual Pollution Prevention Survey show that the 605,677 tonnes of oils, chemicals, other pollutants and bunker fuel recovered last year represent a 37% decrease on the 2002 total. The emergency assistance provided worldwide for 218 vessels with cargoes and bunkers threatening pollution was down from 268 vessels in 2002, another significant decline in the salvage workload.
ISU President Joop Timmermans said, ‘Last year there was a substantial decrease of 18.7% in the number of casualties assisted. This suggests continued shrinkage in the salvage industry’s workload. While the volume of pollutants recovered in 2003 is down on 2002, it represents a figure more in keeping with the trend of recent years. In 2002, the figure was inflated by a laden VLCC, the first such case to appear in the ISU workload for several years. There were no laden VLCC cases involving ISU salvors in 2003.’
Lloyds form remains the most regularly used form of salvage contract.
