Historic tall ship restoration project underway

The GB£1.8 million project, funded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), will focus on vital vessel preservation works to maintain the historic ship’s structural integrity.

“Our team has extensive experience working with heritage vessels and is dedicated to preserving its legacy while ensuring it remains structurally sound for years to come.”

Extensive restoration

The first phase of restoration by Marine Projects Scotland is set to be completed by April 2025, ensuring the Glenlee is ready to welcome visitors for the busy summer season.

This phase involves extensive ship restoration efforts, including the removal of cargo hold deck boards and ballast to inspect and repair the hull. Steelwork repairs, shotblasting, non-destructive testing and the application of new surface coatings will follow.

Additional work will address the ship’s heating and sewage systems, water ballast tanks and materials evaluation to secure long-term stability.

The Glenlee’s restoration will help ensure the iconic vessel remains a lasting symbol of marine heritage.
