Port of London welcomes new tug

A new tug has been delivered to the port of London as part of towage giant Svitzer’s operations on the River Thames and the River Medway.

Svitzer Estelle is the second tug built by Turkish boat builder Uzmar in an ongoing partnership between the two.

The vessel is a Robert Allen RAStar 3200W, and comes after the delivery in May this year of Svitzer Elizabeth, which is being used in the port of Liverpool.

The vessels have a bollard pull of 80 tonnes, an overall length of 32 metres and a beam of 13.2 metres.

This series of tugs is powered by two Caterpillar 3516 E main engines with have IMO III-certified after treatment.

“This is a pivotal moment in the continued modernization of our UK fleet, and it will enable us to continue to meet our customers’ demands as well as ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations,” said Cliff Chow, Svitzer’s London Port manager.

“The waters of the Thames and the Medway are dynamic and unique, so we need tugs that can meet and exceed their specific challenges.”

The new tug will be powered by marine biofuel, which Svitzer uses across its UK fleet.
