Canadian naval architect firm Robert Allan will design its largest battery-electric tug to date for a Chinese port customer.

Two tugs with a 7MW battery system each will be built for the Rizhao Port Towing Company, which is part of the Shandong Port Group, one of the world’s largest port based on cargo volume.

Robert Allan’s AmpRA series of tugs were first produced from the drawing board in 2021 in an effort to maximise the potential of electric propulsion.

This latest design will be the largest and most powerful to date, Robert Allan says, and the two vessels will be the fifth and sixth for Rizhao.
