Sanmar makes double delivery with different designs
Sanmar Shipyards has delivered two quite different Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) design tugs to long-term customer P&O Maritime Logistics for operation in the Dominican Republic.
“As I have said before and will always be delighted to say again, it gives me and everyone else at Sanmar tremendous pleasure when an existing customer comes back for more,” said Sanmar chairman Ali Gurun, as the Turkish shipbuilder brings the number of Sanmar-built tugs in the customer’s fleet to seven.
P&O Carey and P&O Manati are Sanmar-exclusive RAL designs, the former an ASD design while the latter is of tractor tug configuration.
P&O Carey is a RAmparts 2400SX MkII model designated Boğaçay class by Sanmar and of 24.4m LOA and 12m beam. Caterpillar 3516E main engines deliver a bollard pull of 80+ tons and speed 12.5kn, the vessel designed for low-manning operations with a high level of mechanical automation and described as “currently Sanmar’s biggest selling tug design”.
The second vessel, P&O Manati, is a TRAktor-Z 2500SX ATD design, designated the Deliçay class by Sanmar of 25.3m LOA, and 12m beam.
RAL’s TRAktor tugs have either Voith cycloidal or Z-drive propulsion units mounted forward, this particular model opting for Z-drives powered by Caterpillar 3516C main engines also delivering 80+ tbp. Sanmar describes the design as “the latest and most technologically-advanced and environmentally sound variant of a series specifically designed to offer the best possible ship-handling, escort, and terminal support”.
Sanmar’s relationship with P&O Maritime Logistics dates back to 2013, when the 60tbp Bakirçay series ASD tug Bulani was delivered. The following year saw a second similar tug, Sereia, introduced, both vessels operating in Mozambique.
Also in 2014 two conventional twin-screw 45tbp Doğançay series tugs, Egal and M Jeex, commenced operation for DP World in Somaliland and in 2015 P&O Maritime Logistics’ first Boğaçay class tug, Shaheen 2020, entered service in the UAE.
At the tugs’ naming ceremonies, Paola Firpo, senior manager, Legal at DPW Dominicana, took on the traditional ceremonial role of Mother of P&O Carey while Lludelis Espinal of E&M International Consulting carried out the role for P&O Manati.
