Ecomotus has unveiled the Eco Pro, a standalone catalytic hydrogen system designed to reduce emissions and work in harmony with existing combustion engines.

The company sees the solution as a transitional technology, bridging the gap between fossil fuels and the future of hydrogen/electric power.

Developed in South Devon, UK, in collaboration with Bath, Exeter and Plymouth Universities, the NIAB and the MBTC Marine Centre Plymouth, the Eco Pro works by supplying a controlled quantity of pure hydrogen to give a more complete fuel burn during combustion.

The system uses internal combustion emission control, a closed-loop system to regulate precisely the amount of hydrogen needed in real time. The hydrogen comes from de-ionised water and is produced whilst the engine is running, automatically ceasing when the engine is switched off.

Harmful emissions of NOx, CO2 and particulate matter are said to be reduced by 85% with fuel savings of up to 10%. Installation takes just four hours and client maintenance is limited to ensuring that the de-ionised water is topped up.
