Spanish shipyard Rodman Polyships says it is pushing the boundaries of composite shipbuilding with the launch of a new 43m Offshore Patrol Vessel.

Rodman Polyships S.A.U., a Rodman Group shipyard is specialised in the construction of all types of GRP (glass reinforced polyester) and composites vessels, has designed, launched and is now completing the new Rodman 138 Offshore Patrol Vessel for custom surveillance, particularly designed for this new contract.

Rodman is currently building two offshore patrol vessels, this Rodman 138 which has been built for the Spanish Tax Administration Agency and the new Rodman 130 for the Coast Guard Service of the Xunta de Galicia (Autonomic Government).

Both contracts consolidate Rodman’s experience, know-how and expertise in the design and build of high performance patrol vessels, allowing the company to expand into a new segment of boats up to 45m in length built in GRP.

This is a maritime and customs surveillance vessel, built to perform patrol tasks in coastal, territorial and international waters. It is specifically designed to carry out anti-smuggling operations, interception and national and international law enforcement activities.

It is claimed to be one of the largest vessels built worldwide in glass reinforced polyester and composites. It is also equipped with an innovative stabiliser system to reduce pitching and rolling both at idle or when sailing, as well as improving the performance, fuel saving and safer operation in harsh conditions.

The propulsion system consists of two 4-stroke diesel engines of 1,500kW each.

It has been designed for a crew of 18 people, who will be accommodated in eight separate cabins. The vessel is also provided with other spaces and accommodation areas, as well as a safety area. With a range of 2,000 miles, the crew will be able to stay for long periods at sea, which will be an advantage from the operational and effectiveness point of view.

This new model has been developed taking into consideration each requirement specified by the customer as well as the different technical and construction quality requirements of the Rodman standard, optimising the safety and comfort of the crew and passengers on board.

The vessel will remain in the water until her completion and delivery to her owner in the first quarter of 2021.
