Paddle Steamers: A Photographic Legacy
Paddle Steamer were an appealing way for many people to make excursionsdoon the watter during the pre-war period.
But as car ownership and package holidays grew in popularity after the Second World War the steamers went into decline, scaling down their operations and virtually disappearing by the 1960s.
In this book, paddle steamers are revived in the memory by a wide selection of old photographs and vintage postcards, carefully and informatively captioned.
Although most paddle steamers were consigned to breakers yards, a few were preserved by enthusiasts, such as the ‘Waverley’, which completed a Heritage Rebuild in 2000 and remains in service.
One such enthusiast is the author, who is the curator of a maritime collection on paddle steamers and has produced several exhibitions on maritime history.
