Ports of Jersey has selected Austrian-headquartered Frequentis to modernise its existing control centre systems, through an integrated communication system, a ten-year maintenance contract and the first Frequentis implementation of a vessel traffic service (VTS) in U.K. waters.

The company says the system will enable high level integration, an open interface architecture, interoperability with neighbouring coastguard services, and full compliance to the IALA V-128 standard.

Frequentis will deliver its vessel traffic management service, MCS 3020 IP Voice Communication System, as well as digital scan converter, event logging and Search and Rescue Information System features. All underpinned by an extended warranty and ten-year maintenance contract. With the upgrade of the control centre, towers, multiple radios, radars and automatic identification system sites, Ports of Jersey is ready for the surveillance and communications requirements of the future.

“We are very proud of this achievement as it is an important strategic project for an integrated plat- form combining voice, vessel traffic service and other technologies”, said Khashayar Saravandi-Rad, Director Maritime at Frequentis. “In February the factory acceptance test (FAT) was successfully completed – a further great milestone”, he went on to say.

After establishing regional customers in the U.K. such as Port of London and Irish Coastguard, the modernisation programme of Ports of Jersey goes beyond representing the first Frequentis vessel traffic service in UK waters.

From ini- tial engagement through to tender award, the Frequentis team has been flexible to our challenges and innovative in designing a solution to facilitate our Coastguard and VTS function while integrating to other specialist systems we employ”, said Russell Mathew, Coastguard & VTS Manager at Ports of Jersey. “Ports of Jersey operates a 24/7 Coastguard and VTS in a challenging environment, with both commercial and dense leisure traffic requiring reliable communications and effective traffic image to ensure the safe movement of vessels and co-ordination of Maritime SAR (Search and Rescue) – we have full confidence in Frequentis providing our integrated solution and look forward to having our system installed”.
