New York Harbor launches first hybrid electric ferry
New York’s Trust for Governors Island is launching the Harbor Charger, the state’s first hybrid electric ferry, marking a major leap in ferry electrification in the USA.
The US$33 million vessel will connect the island’s growing community of visitors and tenants, replacing the 69-year-old diesel powered Lt. Samuel S. Coursen ferry.
“Equipped with our hybrid propulsion system, battery storage and real-time control platform, this vessel will be reliable, highly efficient and produce significantly fewer emissions,” said Rich Voorberg, president of Siemens Energy for North America.
“We’ve laid the foundation for fully electric operation in the future.”
Emissions reduction
The Harbor Charger can carry 1,200 passengers, 30 vehicles and travel at speeds up to 12 knots – 66% faster than current ferries.
Built by Conrad Shipyard in Louisiana, the ferry features Siemens Energy’s BlueDrive Eco diesel-electric system, BlueVault battery solution and EcoMAIN monitoring technology.
Planned shoreside charging facilities will enable full electric operation, reducing an additional 800 tonnes of emissions each year.
Harbor Charger’s arrival coincides with Governors Island’s 20th anniversary as a public destination and its emergence as a hub for climate research and education, including the forthcoming New York Climate Exchange innovation district.
The Harbor Charger is looking to set a precedent for sustainable maritime transportation in New York Harbor and the wider state, combining green innovation with a faster, cleaner service for passengers.
