ABB expands its marine electrification capabilities

ABB is set to expand its marine electrification capabilities with the acquisition of French power electronics firm BrightLoop.

The integration will allow ABB to scale up its power conversion solutions and expand its installed base in marine electrification, a key component of its broader energy transition agenda.

“This acquisition is a strategic leap forward in our mission to help transport industries operate leaner and cleaner,” said Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division.

“BrightLoop’s software-defined power platform and expertise in high-performance applications will allow us to deliver even more value to our customers as they transition to cleaner, smarter energy systems.”

Business strategy

The move marks a major step in ABB’s strategy to advance the energy transition in industrial mobility and marine propulsion.

BrightLoop’s modular, software-defined power converters are designed to deliver high-efficiency energy systems in the harshest environments, making them ideal for electric vessel applications.

The technology, originally developed for motorsport and now deployed in ABB FIA Formula E, is helping bring reliability, compactness and efficiency to sectors including marine, aerospace and off-highway vehicles.

Its bidirectional power conversion systems are especially suited for electric vessels where power density, ruggedness and efficiency are critical, including ferries and offshore vessels.

With this strategic acquisition, ABB will gain a 93% stake in BrightLoop by Q3 2025, with full ownership expected by 2028. 

ABB said it will retain BrightLoop’s Paris-based operations and invest in more global expansion to meet accelerating demand.
