Emergency fleet expands to deal with migrant boats
The Romanian government will expand its emergency fleet in response to the growing number of migrant boats getting into difficulties.
The first two of a series of Damen Stan Patrol 5009 vessels have been kitted out with new electrical systems by Alewijnse after being built at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania.
They are being equipped for search and rescue and fire-fighting missions and can remain at sea for up to three days without refuelling, says Alewijnse, with accommodation for up to 50 refugees.
“The ships are also equipped with a helicopter transfer platform and have the capability to deploy drones, unmanned vehicles and fast intervention boats,” says Alewijnse. “They will also feature extensive communication and navigation systems that will enable them to participate in coordinated missions with other ships, vehicles and aircraft.”
Alewijnse says it has provided a complete package of electrical installations and automation systems for the two boats, as well as engineering, panel building and commissioning.
Stan Patrol craft are fully equipped for patrol duties in harbours, coastal waters and offshore. With Damen’s Enlarged Ship Concept, a precursor to the Sea Axe hull form, as its foundation, the range is based on a proven design and unrivalled technology, Damen says.
The fleet expansion is part of the Vision 2020 project initiated by the Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, which aims to improve disaster response capability in the Black and the Mediterranean Seas.
