Hydrogen power revolutionises French river transport
The Sogestran Group has launched France’s first hydrogen-powered river vessel, ZULU 06, marking a significant step forward in alternative fuels for inland waterways.
Unveiled on the Seine in Paris, the 55-metre vessel can transport up to 400 tonnes of cargo, powered by two 200 kW hydrogen fuel cells and a 300 kg hydrogen storage system.
This innovative design provides seven days of autonomy, demonstrating the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy solution for urban logistics.
“This vessel is a milestone in sustainable transport,” said Valérie Bouillon-Delporte, executive director of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
“The ZULU 06 exemplifies how alternative fuels like hydrogen can reduce emissions, enhance air quality and transform inland waterways into vital pathways for decarbonized logistics.”
Collaborative innovation
Developed under the EU-funded FLAGSHIPS project, ZULU 06 represents six years of collaborative innovation.
Designed by LMG Marin and equipped with technology from ABB Marine & Ports and Ballard Power Systems, it adheres to the latest standards for clean hydrogen fuel applications.
Pascal Girardet, CEO of the Sogestran Group, emphasised the project’s broader implications.
“The ZULU 06 showcases the power of hydrogen to revolutionize river logistics. It’s a testament to Sogestran’s commitment to advancing sustainable and efficient inland waterway solutions,” he said.
This groundbreaking project highlights the role of inland waterways in the European energy transition, setting a benchmark for integrating alternative fuels into cargo transport.
ZULU 06 is expected to operate commercially in Paris, setting new standards for green logistics.
