Liberty Lines launches hybrid ferries
The first two of nine high-speed hybrid ferries, built by Astilleros Armon Shipyards in Spain for Liberty Lines, have officially launched.
The vessels, named Vittorio Morace and Cristina M, are set to enhance transport routes between Sicily and its surrounding islands.
“We are making a sustainable investment in the renewal of our fleet, with the purpose to continue to offer high-quality services to our stakeholders and minimise environmental impact in order to achieve an emission-free future,” said chief executive at Liberty Lines Gennaro Carlo Cotella.
The ferries are powered by EST-Floattech’s Green Orca battery system, integrated with Rolls-Royce’s mtu hybrid propulsion system, and can operate in various modes.
“After careful selection, testing and integration of the EST-Floattech battery system into the mtu Hybrid PropulsionPack it is great to see that the battery system is performing very well,” said Philippe Gorse, director mission critical E/E hardware at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
Each ferry can accommodate up to 251 passengers across two decks, featuring modern amenities designed for comfort and safety.
The ferries are expected to begin service during the summer season, catering to smaller Sicilian islands. The remaining vessels in the fleet are anticipated to be delivered between 2024 and 2029.
