Damen delivers Ice class ASDs to Ukraine

Named Kapitan Markin and Volodymyr Ivanov, the tugs are equipped to undertake ‘push-pull’ shiphandling duties, escorting, towing and fire fighting operations. The tugs comply with the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping notations; KM* Arc4, R1, AUT1, FF3WS, Escort Tug; including Loadline certificate and GMDS Area 3.

In most respects the configuration and deck layout are identical to the ‘standard’ version of the ASD 3212, with the now familiar high foredeck and ‘super absorbent’ fendering. The tugs are 32.70m in length overall, with a beam of 12.82m, a depth (at sides) of 5.35m and a draft aft of 5.73m.

In this variant the propulsion package installed comprises two Caterpillar 3516C HD+TA/D diesels delivering a total of 4,200bkW (5,632 bhp) coupled to Rolls-Royce US35FP azimuthing propulsion units with 2,800mm diameter fixed pitch propellers. The power rating is lower than the standard version but the major difference is the use of keel cooling, achieved by fitting extensive external cooling ducts on the bottom of the hull and box keel.

On trials Kapitan Markin and its sister ship achieved a bollard pull towing ahead of 69 tonnes and 66 tonnes astern, and a free running speed of approximately 13 knots in either direction.

The tugs are equipped to tow over the bow or stern. A hydraulically powered, double drum, render and recover towing winch is located on the foredeck for shiphandling and escort work. Each drum is driven independently and has a recovery capacity of 60 tonnes at 40m/min and a rendering capacity of 100 tons at 100m/min. Towline tension and length can be preset by the tugmaster and can be adjusted as required.

A single drum hydraulic towing winch is fitted aft in a partially sheltered location between the exhaust and ventilation trunking. The winch, equipped with spooling gear, has a maximum brake load of 200 tonnes on the second layer, and maximum line pull of 30 tonnes at 40m/min. A Mampaey 100 tonne SWL quick release hook is also fitted.

The fire fighting equipment comprises two Kvaerna 1200 cu/m/hr remotely controlled monitors mounted forward of the wheelhouse, supplied by a dedicated diesel driven pump in the engine room. The self protection external spray system is supplied by an electrically driven Sterling 2LND pump rated at 300 cu/m/hr.

Electrical power is supplied by two Caterpillar C6.6 TA auxiliary generators rated at 230/400v 125kVA, 50Hz.

The wheelhouse is typical of Damen ASD practice, designed for maximum all round vision and fully equipped to carry out the duties described, with the controls and instruments arranged on a single console. Comfortable, air conditioned accommodation is provided for up to ten persons, with six cabins, galley, mess/dayroom, switchboard room, dry store and sanitary facilities.
