Dordrecht Island dikes to be reinforced

The two year programme, due to commence imminently, involves reinforcing around 11km of dikes in four locations, with 500m of sheet piling and excavation of around 107 million m3 of soil and clay. The dike revetment will be replaced in several places, with the work also including construction of cycle paths and roads involving instalment of some 25,000 tonnes of asphalt. The joint venture will use a variety of plant including crane barges, excavators, dumpers and bulldozers to complete the work.

The tender included a high content of environmental considerations, including provision for the re-use of material to be excavated. The contract has been awarded by the Hollandse Delta Water Board and is part of the High Water Protection Programme.
