Birse at work on Dartford Creek barrier maintenance programme
Birse in the UK says it is currently at work replacing massive lifting chains and renewing other major pieces of equipment on the Dartford Creek barrier on the south side of the River Thames. The project commenced in June and is due to continue through to 2011.
The project includes:
- Two 30m span vertical lift stacking wheel gates will provide a flood protection height of 10.4m. The vertical movement of each gate is guided and eased by endless roller chains at each side.
- These new roller chains will be lifted onto the barrier and then winched into place, finally being completed as a continuous chain by fixing the connecting links. They are maintenance free stainless steel chains and were designed, manufactured and delivered in 18 weeks. They weigh some 27.5 tons and were delivered in 8m sections.
Once completed the work will help ensure flood protection into the future.
