Dubai Coastal Monitoring Website
As part of its Coastal Zone Monitoring Programme, the Marine Works Unit of the Dubai Municipality has set up a website www.dubaicoast.org which enables viewers to watch near real-time video of wave conditions along the Jumeirah coastline.
The video pictures are obtained by two cameras mounted on the strikingly futuristic Burj al Arab hotel on Jumeirah Beach and are part of a general programme to broaden the Municipality’s knowledge of the physical process at work within the Dubai coastal zone. Other near real-time information that can be accessed from the website includes data on wave heights, water levels, wind, pressure and temperature.
The information is gathered by systems established for the Municipality by the EmuDome Joint Venture, which has a three year contract to monitor the entire 70 km long Dubai coastline. The dynamics of the shoreline are also monitored by EmuDome with regular bathymetric surveys along pre-set profile lines and by land based topographic studies.
The EmuDome Joint Venture has a permanent survey team and vessel based in Dubai to meet the requirements of this and other contracts in the Middle East. The joint venture is between Emu Ltd of the UK and Dubai headquartered Dome International LLC.
