Anchor puts shackles to shame
New Zealand based Manson Anchors recently completed seabed testing on its Boss anchor, producing results that even surprised the company’s testing team.
A 16kg Boss 2 held 4,200kg (9,250lb); however, it bent 16mm shackles in the process.
Testing began with 12m of 8mm diameter chain and 9.5mm shackles at a scope of 5:1 using a 90 tonne tug. “We pulled up to 2,000kg but bent all the shackles. We returned to the dock, went to a chandlery and bought 16mm shackles and 18m of 13mm chain. Back out testing on the tug again, and pulling on the 16kg Manson Boss. This time testing had to stop at 4,200kg because the 16mm shackles were all bending,” said Ned Wood of Manson.
The Manson Boss weighs no more than other anchors, but it’s much bigger and the increased fluke size generates significantly more holding power.
