New TP training facility for Ukraine
Specialist dynamic positioning (DP) training is available for the first time in Ukraine following the launch of a new facility by Bibby Ship Management.
The $1.5m purpose built centre will employ the latest Kongsberg simulators to deliver basic and advanced competence assessment programmes to almost 250 students during its first year.
The ambitious new installation will sit alongside the group’s newly relocated crew management premises in Sevastopol and follows a highly successful DP development in Mumbai as it continues to strengthen its global full service ship management operation.
Adrian Ashley, training development manager at Bibby Ship Management said, ‘Ukraine has a large pool of experienced seafarers working in the traditional and offshore sectors of our industry, so it made sense for us to establish our own manning and training centre here and consolidate our long-standing presence in Eastern Europe.
‘The Sevastopol facility aims to enhance the competence and safety critical skills of those working in the offshore industry and we’re confident it can replicate the success and high standards of our Mumbai centre.
‘Our footprint in the area continues to grow organically and our new larger premises will ensure we’re able to manage that growth in an efficient and seamless manner by integrating our training and manning services into one purpose-built facility.’
Each training programme is set against potential scenarios and led by Oleg Legovka, a Ukrainian master mariner with more than 15 years’ experience in the offshore industry. The facility has been accredited by the Nautical Institute and the first students graduated at the turn of the year.
Graduate numbers are expected to double in 2010 when the company increases the regularity of its DP courses and makes additional offshore industry programmes available. This is as a key facet of its ongoing expansion plans for the Crimean peninsula.
