Refiited ferries catch a lift to Russia

The ferries, which previously served as the Fastcats from Portsmouth in the UK to Ryde and Shanklin on the Isle of Wight, were moved to Sochi in Russia, where they will be used as passenger ferries in the Black Sea.

The 130 ton ferries were sent to Swansea for a refit following the completion of their cross-Solent service and in April PSP was called on to transport them to their new home in Russia.

PSP’s staff worked tirelessly over the UK Bank Holidays to ensure the ferries were loaded safely onto the transportation vessel OXL Fantasy in Southampton docks.

The two 40m long ferries, which can reach speeds of 33 knots, were delivered alongside the transportation vessel and lifted from the water directly onto the deck, using the ship’s own cranes. The PSP team was tested by the elements as rain and wind prevailed throughout the loading, making conditions difficult. However, the expert team, having decades of experience of loading in adverse weather, loaded the ferries on time and in perfect condition.

The ferries reached their destination on 14 May after being in transit for two weeks.

PSP’s managing director Frank Dixie said, “We were delighted to be chosen to deliver the ferries to their destination. PSP has vast experience in transporting commercial work boats of this size, having transported boats for all three major cross-Solent transport companies just a few years ago and many more before then. All the meticulous planning paid off and the ferries arrived safely and on time.”
