Chinese firm unveils latest upsized wind turbine
Mingyang has left wind turbine manufacturers in the shade of its new 20MW mammoth, with an even larger one to come in the next couple of years.
The MySE 18.X-20MW was built at the firm’s Shanwei manufacturing base as a development of the 14-16MW platforms, and is said to ’highlight modularity, lightweight design, high efficiency, and reliability’.
The rotor diameters range between 260-292m, sweeping an area equivalent to the area of nine football pitches and generating a massive 820GWh a year, the firm says.
”Designed for global deployment in medium-to-high wind speed regions, with specific suitability for typhoon-prone sites, the turbines are equipped with active anti-typhoon technology, capable of withstanding Category 17 typhoons,” Mingyang says.
Calling the MySE 18.X-20MW a ’breakthrough in Mingyang’s hybrid drive family’, the company is not stopping there, intending to roll out a 22MW version by 2025.
MySE 22MW’s rotor would be more than 310 metres.
In Europe, manufacturers have been trying to put the brakes on the burgeoning size of wind turbines, foreseeing knock-on effects such as the lack of installation vessels that can cope with them.
