Another island ferry for Norden-Frisia

Cassens Werft is to build a new diesel-electric ferry for German shipping company, Norden-Frisia.

The new ferry will be of the same dimensions as the previously delivered 'Frisia IV'

This follows the delivery of a sister vessel, Frisia IV, in 2002. Norden-Frisia says the dimensions of the new double-ended vessel will be almost identical to its sister ship, so will measure 74.3m in length, have a beam of 1.75m and a load capacity of 325 tonnes.

Norden-Frisia’s new ferry will have the capacity to carry around 1,340 passengers and 60 cars and has been designed to meet the growing demand for transport to Norderney offshore island. For this purpose, four Voith-Schneider propulsion plants will be fitted.

“By equipping the vessel with the proven Voith-Schneider propulsion technology, it will have the necessary manoeuvrability for the narrow and shallow fairway to Norderney,” said Carl-Ulfert Stegmann, CEO of Reederei Norden-Frisia.

The vessel will also be fitted with an exhaust after-treatment plant and particle filter from Kurre Abgastechnik. Norden-Frisia says with this technology, emissions of exhaust gases will be reduced by up to 90%, while particulate matter will be reduced by up to 99%, giving “almost the same emission values as with a gas-powered ship”. This will ensure the company meets the increased demands of operating within the national park.

It will be built in accordance with EU regulations and will be fitted with an air conditioning system, a lounge, restaurant and gallery.

Following its delivery, The Frisia IV was the German island ferry to receive the German environmental quality certificate ‘Blue Angel Ship Design. Norden-Frisia says this new build is also set to receive the same award.

Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for summer 2015.
