Global Energy Storage closes investment in Rotterdam

Guernsey-based Global Energy Storage has finalised its investment in the Port of Rotterdam, it announced on February 22.

Port of Rotterdam - GES

It is the first investment by the energy company in the assets of the Stargate Terminal owned by Gunvor Group, which include four Class 1 product tanks totalling more than 212,000m3.

The company plans to develop infrastructure for biofuel and other renewable fuels storage, gas storage, gas to chemicals production, green and blue hydrogen production and hydrogen carriers, such as ammonia.

GES has also bought the rights to develop up to 20 hectares of vacant land, and has plans to develop a multi-purpose seagoing jetty.

The site has a large waterfront with deep water access and scope for brownfield and greenfield development.

“This is an important milestone for GES,” said GES CEO Peter Vucins. “The location of this first investment in the heart of the Port of Rotterdam positions us perfectly to significantly contribute to our client’s needs to develop the new storage and logistics infrastructure to facilitate the energy transition which is upon us and accelerating.”

The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port, with deep-water access and world-class connectivity to inland waterways and pipeline infrastructure.

GES is backed by Bluewater, the specialist international private equity firm focused on the middle-market energy sector.
