Fassmer build two tractors for Bugsier

An order was placed with Fassmer in November 2012 to develop, construct and deliver two 31m ship handling tractors, required to replace older units in the Bugsier fleet.

Already allocated the names Bugsier 7 and Bugsier 8, the new tugs will incorporate improvements in configuration and equipment gained from experience with existing azimuthing tractors already in service. The hullform and propulsion systems will be optimised to give the vessels a minimum bollard pull of 70 tonnes and a free running speed of 12 knots. With a length of just under 31m, a breadth of 11.3m and a draft of 6.2m, the vessels will meet the class requirements for Germanischer Lloyd +100 A5 E1 RSA(200) TUG +MC E1 AUT.

The tugs will be propelled by a pair of Schottel SRP 4000T propulsion units, incorporating controllable pitch propellers located beneath the forward portion of the hull. A ‘docking- protection’ plate is positioned forward of the propulsion units and a skeg at the stern. Power will be provided by two ABC 12 DZC diesel main engines generating a total of 6,500 bhp (4,780 kW).

A single ‘split-drum’ towing winch will be hydraulically powered and have a maximum brake holding load of 178 tonnes and a line pull of 30 tonnes. The drum will be designed to carry a 500m steel wire towline of 52mm diameter.

The construction and outfitting of two tugs for Bugsier will be a further milestone for the Fassmer shipyard. Based on the banks of the river Weser, with a history of over 162 years of building work vessels, ferries, coastal trip boats, maritime cruisers and research vessels, an order for innovative harbour tugs is an interesting addition to the company’s portfolio.

The completion and handover of these new additions to the Bugsier fleet is planned for mid to late 2014.
