Three deliveries at Cheoy Lee in a week

Busy Hong Kong shipbuilder Cheoy Lee reports the delivery of three vessels in the third week of April.

Cheoy Lee built the Nautica TG Puteri XVII to a Japanese design

All of different types and for a variety of clients, the trio demonstrate the yard’s wide range of expertise and flexibility.

Nautica TG Puteri XVII is an ASD tug built to a Japanese design for a Malaysian client.

With dimensions of 31.00m in length overall, 9.50m beam and 3.87m draft, the tug is capable of deepsea operation and work in harbours. Of all steel construction, the vessel was built to Bureau Veritas class 1+ HULL+MACH Tug Unrestricted Navigation.

The tug’s propulsion system is from Niigata, comprising a pair of 6L26HLX main engines, each developing 2,000 bhp at 750 rpm and driving two Niigata ZP-31 ‘Z-Peller’ units. The hull and propulsion configuration gives the vessel a maximum free running speed of 13 knots, with a bollard pull of 50 and 45 tonnes ahead and astern respectively.

Auxiliary machinery includes a pair of 115kW Yanmar generators. A fire pump driven by the port main engine delivers 1,300 m3/hr of water to two fire monitors mounted forward of the wheelhouse.

A hydraulic towing winch/anchor windlass on the foredeck and hydraulic tugger winch on the aft deck are by MacGregor. The Palfinger PK12000M knuckle boom on the after deck is hydraulically driven by an independent power pack.

Nautica TG Puteri XVII accommodates a crew of ten, with eight crew in two four-berth cabins on the lower deck and the Captain and Chief Engineer housed in the deckhouse along with the galley, dining and washroom facilities.

Another significant delivery, the Teras Ariel, is the first in a series of five 50m anchorhandling tugs for Teras Offshore in Singapore. Departing Kowloon under grey skies, the company’s own crew sailed directly to Batam in Indonesia, where it entered service.

Designed by Wartsila Ship Design Singapore, the vessels are intended for towing barges and rigs, shiphandling, anchorhandling duties, transportation of equipment and materials, firefighting, maintenance, and pollution control duties. Measuring 50.00m in length, 12.60m beam, and 4.50m draft they conform to ABS class; +A1, Towing Vessel E, +AMS, UWILD.

All five vessels will be powered by twin Yanmar 6EY26W diesels, each developing 2,610 bhp at 750 rpm. Power is transmitted to a pair of Berg 2,650mm diameter controllable pitch propellers via Twin-Disc gearboxes. Free running speed is 13.5knots and a bollard pull of 69 tonnes was recorded on trials.

Manoeuvrability is enhanced by a 320kW Nakashima TCT-105 electric bow thruster incorporating a controllable pitch propeller and producing 4.9 tonnes of thrust. The vessel’s range is extended with tanks taking up to 544m3 of fuel and 234m3 of fresh water .

Three Caterpillar 350kW 3-phase generators supply onboard electrical power, backed up by an 82kW air cooled Caterpillar C4.4 emergency generator.

Towing gear is exclusively from MacGregor in Singapore, including the 75 tonne anchor handling/towing winch, 6 tonne anchor windlass, a rope storage reel, a combination shark jaw and towing pins, two tugger winches and two capstans. A Palfinger deck crane with 9m reach is used for handling a work boat carried on the port side. The Zodiac 6-man SOLAS rescue boat, with its ‘A’ frame launching davit, is located to starboard.

Teras Ariel has accommodation for a crew of up to 24, in four, four-berth cabins, three double berth cabins, and two single cabins for the officers. The elevated bridge has excellent all round visibility, with both forward and aft facing control stations. Steering gear is supplied by Jastram and the full outfit of navigational equipment is primarily from Furuno.

The third delivery in April was a 21m multi-purpose launch built for Hongkong United Dockyard, where it will work with custom built barges also recently delivered by Cheoy Lee.
Designed in-house by the Cheoy Lee design team over 20 years ago, the design of this venerable launch has changed very little over the years. Used by several branches of Shell Petroleum in South East Asia, the steel vessel has been used for both pilot and mooring launch duties.

Construction is to Bureau Veritas class, and the launch is powered by a pair of Caterpillar C18 diesels, each developing 600 hp at 1800 rpm MCR. The propellers are fixed pitch and rotate in nozzles for improved thrust, resulting in a bollard pull of 18.7 tonnes, and a top speed of 12.5 knots.

A single 17.5kW Onan generator is also housed in the open plan engine room. Fuel is contained in a large double bottom tank in the engine room and two wing tanks outboard of the main engines. Fresh water is stored in a double bottom tank forward of the engine room. Total fuel capacity is 15,200 litres, and fresh water capacity is 1,600 litres.

Accommodation is minimal and comprises of a simple galley and head on the lower deck forward, with seating for 24 passengers on the main deck aft of the helm station. The launch is designed to be operated by a crew of three.
