To produce a register of the world’ s tugs is an impossible task, when one considers the huge variation in size and the obscure location of so many smaller vessels. With the new 5th edition of Tugs of the World, Clarkson Research Services Ltd has almost certainly produced the most comprehensive register yet available, listing some 6,060 vessels. A new edition is published every two years and this one is undoubtedly the most useful in several respects.
Information is provided on coastal tugs, harbour tugs, anchor handling tugs, escort tugs, fire fighting tugs, oceangoing tugs and salvage tugs. The book’s comprehensive and much improved index sections make access to data on each and every one of the vessels included even quicker. Also included is a directory of tug owners and subsidiaries listing some 1,314 contact addresses. In the main data section all tugs are listed in alphabetical order.
The data available on each individual vessel includes, in most cases, owner/operator or management company names, tug type, year built and yard, classification, flag, tonnage, dimensions, machinery, bollard pull, service/maximum speeds, horsepower and home port. Many entries are supported by data on tank capacities, winches and towing gear and useful facts on emergency intervention equipment, communication systems, accommodation and safety aids.
A statistical section provides other useful data on tugs and fleets worldwide. A few photographs are included but this can only be regarded as a sample of some representative vessels.
